What you should have eaten this Halloween

Our costumes might be put away, but that sluggish feeling of too much consumed corn syrup and sugary candies is definitely still around. Yes, part of the fun of Halloween is snacking on candy corn while you carve the jack-o-lantern. But the binge-fest that the holiday has become is really out of control.

So I made a list of what you should have indulged on. Though they all fall under the category of desserts, they could not be more different. These confections, though, are available for your delight all through the winter.

What you had: Lemon Dum Dum
The little flavored lollipops were everywhere – and you couldn’t help but throw a few in your bag on the way home from the party.

What you should have had: Pampano’s Yuzu Tart. This lemon and yuzu curd tart is accented with toasted meringue, coconut caramel sauce, tequila gelee. The coconut and meringue bring out the lemon and Yuzu flawlessly. For lemon-ness, the two are incomparable.

What you had: Butterfinger
This classic holiday candy probably came in a 500 piece “party” bag, or ended up along with dozens of other mini chocolates in your plastic trick-or-treating pumpkin basket. The orange middle is notoriously flaky, though it’s difficult to put your finger on what flavor it is.

What you should have had: The Orchard’s Butterscotch Budino. This homemade pudding is light yet creamy, and topped with a fluffy crème fraiche whipped cream and caramel crisps. Unlike the Butterfinger, this pudding actually tastes like butterscotch, and we can’t get enough of it.

What you had: Peeps
The marshmallow treat always seems to make an appearance, whether in the form of chicks (easter), hearts (valentine’s day) or most recently ghosts. Texture-wise, they are a cross between silly putty and cotton balls rolled in sugar. Yum.

What you should have had: Klee’s Passionfruit & Marshmallow Meringue Sorbet. The Austrian spot’s desserts are wildly creative yet cohesive, just like this sorbet that uses real ingredients (aka no partially hydrogenated corn syrup).
